First, an explanation of the bandname: Vaakevandring means "to walk and
wake up the people". And that's their goal. To wake people up
from their apathy, and their denial of THE lifesource. Vaakevandring want
to spread the word of Jesus Christ, the Saviour. Vaakevandring is a
totally different type of black metal band. Compared to Dimmu Borgir,
Covenant, Emperor or Scaliach, for example, they are something completely
different, but their musical influences are related. To straighten this
out a bit, you could say that Vaakevandring play a sort of athmospheric epic
black metal, with lots of synths and relaxing melodies. Vaakevandring are
from Norway, (you've probably already guessed) and by all means, they play the
Norwegian type of black metal. They personally think that there is a huge
variety in black metal, but you can distinguish if they come from Norway or not.
An important distinction: Vaakevandring are not involved with the black
metal scene, or the satanist image thing. They don't have the satanist or
atheistic type lyrics, but the intensity of the music still grabs you and won't
let you go. By all means, they are not a Christian answer to Dimmu borgir
or Limbonic art. Vaakevandring has a totally new concept of musical
relaxation. They can blow your brains all over the floor with their
norse-like style, or they can break your heart with their beautiful melodies.
Vaakevandring are aggressive, yet melodic. To the most extreme Black metal
fan, who only enjoys pure unmelodic evil music I can just say, stay away, this
is not for you.
Alexander and Trond have played together in various bands trough the years.
In 1996 they started a pop-band with Morten and a local guitarplayer, called "Lothlorien"
(not to be confused with the black metal act with the same name).
Lothlorien gradually became more heavy, and they soon changed the name to
"Inertia". Trond switched from playing the bass to growling, and their
second guitarplayer started playing the bass. After a while, Lothlorien
got some internal problems because of religion. Their second guitarplayer
(now a bass player) wanted to write about darker subjects. So, he quit.
Around the same time Pål and Ronny asked Morten if he wanted to join them in
their project "Signum Crusis". They rehearsed once, and then they asked
Alexander to join on the guitar. Now they changed the band name to "Korsferd".
The line-up was now: Morten (guitar), Alexander (guitar), Ronny (bass),
and Pål on drums. After a while, they decided that Ronny should
concentrate on singing, so they asked Trond to join on bass. The band name
was also changed to "Vaakevandring". And that's where they are called
today.
There has been a lot of rumors on the Internet about the engineer and producer
of Vaakevandring's first demo, Stian Aarstad (Formerly of Dimmu Borgir.)
The reason Stian wanted to mix their demo, is that he heard them at a show they
played. He offered them a free session in studio, because he needed training in
mixing and engineering. Their demo was finished in December 1998, and they
have at this point made 1000 copies of it. It was released on cassette in
Indonesia in the beginning of 2000.
Vaakevandring has not planned any new studio sessions yet, but they are included
on the Christian heavy metal sampler, "In The Shadow Of Death", from Endtime
Productions.
